Overture Maps API
We are huge fans of the Overture Maps Foundation – it’s all about making awesome, free map data that anyone can use. Started by some big names like Meta, Amazon and Microsoft, it’s here to change the way we think about maps—no more data locked behind paywalls or proprietary systems. They pull in data from all kinds of sources: local governments, private companies, and community projects like OpenStreetMap. This blend gives them accurate info on everything from roads and buildings to city boundaries. It’s a big step forward for developers, cities, and anyone who wants to use map data to create cool things or make better decisions.
We’d actively encourage you to read their website and look through their data schemas to fo find out more
They’ve done phenomenal work making the datasets available inside most of the Cloud companies as public datasets e.g. Google Cloud Platform’s BigQuery and Snowflake Data Marketplace
Us being huge API enthusiasts thought it’d be great to make those same datasets available as a public API, so people can easily learn the kind of data it contains without needing to learn SQL. We’ve made the API open source so anyone can fork it, and also as a Cloud service so people can play with it straight away.
